Embracing Collective Action
Mark Ristich, Opal Leung, Cathy Cheng & Paul Lao
Room TBA
An innovative new way to give. No one has ever heard of solving a local crisis by just giving a dollar, much less any global ones. But with the global population nearing 7 billion, the power of a dollar has changed dramatically.
Overview
Learn about the UBC Dollar Project, an award-winning initiative which dreams of seeing every person on the UBC Campus collectively donate one dollar each to a charitable cause. Learn why this philosophy has the power to change the present face of philanthropy, and why it is the practical solution to the apathy that discourages most young people from giving to charity. Participate in a social movement that aims to create real, lasting change – by only using change.

FULL - Engaging with the Ego
Carman Lam, Benjamin Black, Sarah Ravensbergen & Nadia Mithani
Room TBA
Why do some of us strive to ‘save the world’? How small are our egos, really? We will explore the motivations behind community service & development and the spectrum between philanthropist & saviour.
Overview
Have you ever thought about why you choose to engage either locally or internationally? Is it all for the good of the society? Or is it actually for self-gain? In this workshop, we will talk about ethical issues related to community service and development, such as sustainability, reciprocity and motivation. The discussions that will take place in the workshop will motivate you to think about whether you are actually enabling a community or disabling it, in an effort to gain personal satisfaction. There are no right answers to the questions we will pose, but we hope to empower and motivate you to find your own truths through critical engagement with yourself and your peers. “There are always at least two motivations… sometimes the one side is philanthropy and sometimes the other side is saviour. There is a lot of ego present in saving and one needs to consider the level of ego. It is impossible to have a pure motivation, the thing is how to handle the two sides.” – ISL community partner, Comitan (Mexico)

Are things really better “left unSAID”? What are the hidden messages around us that promote (in)equity?
Overview
When you see someone pointing both thumbs up, what does that mean? Which one does “high-hell” symbolize, glamour or pain? In this workshop, we will explore the “hidden messages” in our everyday life that you might, or might not, notice before—from sources including body languages, media commercials, UBC advertisements…etc. How do you know what you see is the same as what the others see? Is there any message that is unsaid, that is normalized, which in fact conceals (in)equity issues that we should be aware of? Unconsciously, our cultural background could lead us into different perspectives and judgments that lead to unnecessary misunderstanding. Yet, these misunderstandings can be avoid. Not to be skeptical, but be careful with the information lay in front of your eyes. Is there any…hidden messages?
