FULL - Breakthrough the Conflict
Dima Pelipeychenko & Sarah Chung
Room TBA
Whether we like it or not, conflict is present in every organization. This workshop will give you fast and easy strategies for effective conflict management that will ultimately result in effective teamwork and saving your time.
Overview
Productively engaging in conflict is always valuable. Most people are willing and interested in resolving their conflicts; they just need the appropriate skill set and opportunities in which to practice this. Without a conflict skill set, people want to avoid conflict, hoping it will go away or not wanting to make a “big deal out of nothing.” Research and personal experiences show us that, when we avoid conflict, the conflict actually escalates and our thoughts and feelings become more negative. Our conflict management workshop examines conflict styles and allows participants to really see their own behavior patterns. Through behavioral style assessments, interactive discussions, and role-play, we help workshop participants to change the way they view and handle daily conflict. The result is a re-alignment of attitudes and a tremendous increase in teamwork, improved relationships and more time!

Old School No More: Rethinking the GDP with GNH
Jacqueline Chong BFA ’11
Room TBA
What’s value to you/to an organization you’re part of? How do you measure success? Sure, you’ve learned about the GDP in econ 101. But that’s old school. Let’s talk about GNP – Gross National Happiness.
Overview
Does “success” = “value”? How does the world measure the two? You may have encountered what’s called the GDP – Gross Domestic Product – in your macroeconomics class. The GDP is a way by which a country can measure its success, looking at how much “stuff” they’re making and how that translates to “real money”. But can you use this same tool to measure value? No. For you to be unreasonably innovative leaders you need to rethink the system. At this workshop you’ll get to tackle the puzzle and learn about a possible solution: Gross National Happiness (aka GNH). You’ll get to explore how you can calculate value and adapt the idea of GNH to the clubs and organizations you lead.

How to reconnect youth with nature
Rosalind Sadowski
Room TBA
Learn about how we view the natural world, and how YOU can change that!
Overview
Come learn about the concept of paradigms, and explore how our paradigms shape the way we interact with the natural world and with other people. In particular, discover how certain key developments over time have led humans to see themselves as separate from “nature”, and hence not responsible for it/to it. Paradigms are only the start. Once you understand what we think and why we think it, the workshop will explore how we can overcome the bridge that has developed between humans and nature. In particular, we will examine how, as young people, we have a role in actively re-engaging ourselves with our natural environment, so that we all feel a greater sense of stewardship towards the planet and its future. The main focus of the presentation will be on strategies: we know there is a disconnect- now how do we overcome it? Through examples of my work with both Common Energy UBC and Oxfam UBC, we will examine how becoming involved with community organizations can help bring people together and bring about this “reconnection”. Participants will have a chance to discuss specific opportunities or projects they see being applicable to the discussion, in terms of moving forward.

The Power of the Love Note: How a Chicken Changed Camp
Kait Mooney
Room TBA
In a world where genuine human connection is becoming less common, hear the story of how one “Love Chicken” spread celebration and inspiration through the recognition of small wins to a summer camp community and beyond.
Overview
There can be much more to work than getting to the end of the day and completing a list of mundane tasks. In a world where human connection and, for lack of better term, “love” is becoming less common, hear the story of how one “Love Chicken” spread gratitude, inspiration and thanks to a summer camp community and beyond. The Love Chicken Philosophy challenges the traditional ways of celebrating leadership by celebrating smaller wins within a team setting in an every day leader’s life rather than solely acknowledging the large accomplishments of leaders. In “The Power of the Love Note: How a Chicken Changed Camp” learn how the Love Chicken Philosophy and small win success theories can be applied to where you live, work or play to encourage, show appreciation for and challenge your team to celebrate and challenge one another to even greater heights.

Size Isn’t the Only Thing That Matters: How to Keep Your Team Engaged
Peter Yang, Danielle Anderson, Camille Esquivel & Nathan Chow
Room TBA
Leadership isn’t just about delegating tasks to people. True leadership is about engaging and communicating effectively with each other – and you can have the capability to do that. As executives from the Chinese Varsity Club, the largest social club on campus, we will show you how we apply these concepts into our organization.
Overview
With 80 years of history, CVC has gone through its fair share of trials and tribulations. Having an executive body of over 70 students, it is imperative that such a large team stays connected and empowered to carry out their roles. In our short time, we will discuss ways you can create an effective culture of informal communication while still being able to be productive and organized. Regardless if you are part of a student club, workforce or volunteer organization – you can take initiative to bond your team together – because you can contribute to an organization’s growth AND sustain it.
